The devastating earthquakes of 25th April, 2015 and 12 May 2015 caused huge damage across Nepal. On June 25 2015, the International Conference on Nepal’s Reconstruction (ICNR) was held in Nepal where the then External Affairs Minister, Smt. Sushma Swaraj committed US$ 1 billion from GoI, comprising US$ 250 million as grant and US$ 750 million as Line of Credit, for post-earthquake reconstruction projects in Nepal.

For utilization of the grant component of US $ 250 million, a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed between the Government of India and Government of Nepal on 20th February 2016. In terms of this MOU, US $ 50 million each was allotted for the culture sector, following which an MOU was signed between the Government of India and Government of Nepal on August 24, 2017 for reconstruction/retrofitting of 28 cultural heritage sites in 8 districts of Nepal.

For conservation/reconstruction of 12 cultural heritage sites, the Embassy of India, Kathmandu on December 12, 2019 appointed INTACH to provide design and project management consultancy services for restoration works. For the remaining 16 cultural heritage sites, CLPIU (Building), NRA is the implementing and monitoring agency. The heritage structures will be conserved as per Nepal’s Ancient Monument Preservation Act aiming towards restoring the heritage sites to their past glory and traditions.
